If you’re are planning on doing your own rescreening of your window screen or screen doors here are some tips

There are four things that make a window screen and they are:

• Aluminum frame
• Screen mesh (fiberglass)
• Aluminum corners (for miter cut frames)
• splyne (the rubber that holds the screen in place)

Tools

• Screen splyne roller (for rolling in splyne)
• Flat head screw driver (for pushing in corners)
• Box cutter blade (for cutting excess splyne and screen)
• Saw or electric chop saw (for cutting aluminum frame)
• clamps (for holding frame in place on a table)

Measuring

Measuring the opening where the screen goes is very important.  If you have aluminum or vinyl encasement’s with channels for the screen then the rule is you have to measure from the inside of the channel to the the outside of the opposite channel and then deduct 1/8.  This will ensure you that the screen will have room to be taken in and out.  If you have double hung wood windows then measure top to bottom and side to side and deduct 1/8 to 1/4 from the width and from the length.

Building it

Once the frame is cut and put together with the corners then you must screen it.  For this you will need a table to work on.  Place the frame on the table and roll the screen over it, then roll in the splyne with the screen splyne tool.  You may need to to this a couple of times to get the screen straight, do not do it to tight that the frame is con-caving in .  After you’re done and satisfied with your screen be very careful and cut out all the excess screen away from the frame and you are done.

Screen door repair in Calabasas.

• Removing the Screen
• A sliding screen is supported on rollers that ride in a track. Lift it until the rollers clear the track. Then, pull the bottom out and lower the door until it clears the top edge of the frame.
• Remove the door handle to provide unobstructed access to the screen. If the handle is damaged, this is a good time to replace it.
• Grab the screen spline with your hand and gently pull upward to remove it. Repeat the process for the other spline segments.
• To remove the rollers, carefully pry them from the edge of the door with a screwdriver. On some doors, you may have to depress a spring clip to release each assembly.
• Lay the replacement screen over the doorframe. Align one edge of the screen with the outside edge of the door to ensure that the screen is square to the frame.
• Beginning at one corner, use the convex roller on the spline-installation tool to press the screen into the groove on a long edge of the door frame.
• After installing all of the spline, use a sharp utility knife to trim the excess screen. Position the knife tip at the junction of the spline and outside edge of the spline groove.
• Use the concave roller on the tool to press the spline into the groove. Apply gentle pressure and angle the tool slightly toward the outside of the frame to avoid tearing the screen.
• Slide the new roller assembly into the opening in the edge of the door and engage the clips that hold the roller in place.
• Replace the screen panel in the door track and check that it closes evenly against the jamb. If it doesn’t, correct the roller positions by turning the adjustment screws.
• If the door latch is broken, buy a replacement and secure it to the jamb with a screw.

“My problem is keeping our patio screen door level. My  wife has a fit when the door doesn’t slide smoothly. I hate trying to level the door but since I hate my wife’s yelling and hollering more I muddle through. I have the typical screen door where you adjust the wheels with the screws over the wheels. Is there some secret to doing it easily”. T. Williams

There is a secret!  Most rolling door problems… whether it be screen doors, garage doors or shower doors… are usually related wear in the rollers, not the skills of the adjuster! I have played that game myself… adjust and adjust until you want to drive your fist through the screen!  Ugh. Calm, NH… deep breaths… better now…

Remove the door and look at the rollers. If they are plastic, look for broken edges or excessive rust. If the rollers are metal, look for bent or rough edges… the metal rollers generally don’t break but their mounts wear.

Is the mounting assembly bent or are the rollers binding on the shaft? If any of these conditions exist, put away the silicone spray or the WD-40 and replace ALL of the rollers… top and bottom. That is, unless the top rollers are 1) nonexistent (some sliding screens use a guide instead of a roller on top) or 2) in pristine condition. This should solve your problem.

It is also possible that your problem lies not with the hardware but with the patio door frame. Settlement in the door frame or poor initial installation can make perfect or even “just adequate” adjustment a hopeless task. So if everything else seems OK, make a few vertical measurements between the top and bottom tracks. Does the center of the track measure less than the ends? This would cause binding that adjustment might not be able to compensate for. Is the frame square? Measure across both “opposite corners”… upper left to lower right and versa visa. If these two measurements are not nearly identical, the frame is not a rectangle but a parallelogram. This means that the top and bottom tracks are closer together than they should be… another condition that can cause binding.

These last few heartbreakers are not simple to repair. The mouldings around the frame would have to be removed to see why the frame is distorted. The frame would have to be cut loose on the top and sides and repositioned in correct alignment to the bottom track. Depending on the age of your door set and the condition of the glass (foggy insulated glass, perhaps?) sometimes the best solution is to just replace the whole gosh-darned thing. The labor for a repair of this sort can be nearly as high as installing a new set… sans materials, of course!
